tacobar • me • a fine time

25 Apr veracruz pescado taco • tacobar

We’ve all noticed the explosion of taco trucks and eager chefs hitting the street. But there’s another — quieter — movement gaining traction in San Francisco…the “upscale” taqueria.

It seems like every few months, a new “upscale” taqueria is opening its doors in hopes of proving taco-crazed San Franciscans with its gourmet twist on the taqueria experience. The Marina has Tacolicious and Mamacitas, NoPa has Nopalito, the Lower Haight has The Little Chihuahua…and as of last April, the Pacific Heights district has Tacobar.

la cascada taqueria

1 Apr la cascada taqueria

This week, I ventured off-the-beaten-path…to see what Carnitas Salvador was all about (a lesser known but acclaimed – at least on the ‘taco-street’ – take-out/deli/taqueria located in the Bernal Heights district of San Francisco). Sadly, Carnitas Salvador closed its doors. In its place stood La Cascada Taqueria.

Could La Cascada Taqueria be a ‘diamond in the rough’?

the iconic el tonayense

21 Oct al pastor taco • el tonayense

One could say that El Tonayense is the street food “daddy” of San Francisco. The taco truck’s been serving up authentic Mexican street food for almost 2o years. In street food talk that is a long time!

The Santana family has successful built a taco truck empire – if that is possible. The success from their first truck led the family to add another; and then a handful more, a taqueria and a catering service. These days, El Tonayense taco trucks dot the city.

a taco tour • the mission

20 Sep pollo taco • el gillo grio

The Mission district has been “the place to go” for taco-crazed (or burrito) San Franciscans for decades. The neighborhood is one-of-a-kind – full of color, history, energy, murals and great food.

I’ve eaten my fair share of tacos. Not only in writing this blog…but tacos are good eats! I’ve been a regular at the El Tonayense taco truck (the one of Harrison Street & 22nd Street) since I’ve lived in San Francisco. But thanks to this blog I’ve had an opportunity to try relatively new vendors, hidden gems, and really celebrate the wonderful and creative food this neighborhood is dishing up…by way of taco.

So here’s my ideal taco tour (thus far) in the Mission district. Enjoy!

the little chihuahua’s fierce bark

8 Sep carne asada taco • the little chihuahua

Located in the Lower Haight district of San Francisco, The Little Chihuahua is an upscale, yet laid-back taqueria with a mission to make Mexican-inspired food using sustainable farming ingredients.

Their menu is extensive yet predicable: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, pozole, tortilla soup, nachos and more. They also offer a kick-ass Mexican brunch menu which is available on the weekends until 3pm.

the legendary el metate

19 Aug el mate

A taco blog would be incomplete if it excluded El Metate. I mean, let’s be honest…that’s like discussing fall sports without mentioning football. Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme. Nonetheless, El Metate is a legendary taqueria located in the southern edge of San Francisco’s Mission district.

Like many Mission taquerias, it’s an “order-at-the-counter” establishment with colorful décor, and ample indoor and outdoor seating.

They offer an assortment of Mexican food, but El Metate is probably most well-known for their hearty burritos and fish taco. SF weekly awarded El Metate “best fish taco” in 2008.

So let’s talk taco…

craving fish tacos

26 Jul

Did you pick up San Francisco Chronicle’s Sunday Edition? They ran a 3-page spread on the growing trend of fish tacos in the Bay Area – chefs catch on, roll out a haul of fish tacos.

It just goes to shows, the deliciousness of tacos is catching on…and the street food movement is growing stronger!

The article includes 4 fish taco recipes from Taco Shop @ Underdog, 21st Amendment and Dish.

I know what I’m making for dinner tonight, the Baja-style fish tacos from Taco Shop @ Underdogs! If you want to know more about this place, see my July 16th blog post here.

holy guacamole • a mexicatessen!

23 Jul

La Palma Mexicatessen offers what you’d expect from any delicatessen – a solid section of quality products commonly found in Mexican cuisine, pre-made foods, and a “deli” counter where patrons can fill their bellies with a delicious meal or take-out.

It opened in 1953 – and while it has become a San Francisco institution it has remained family-owned (switch ownership once).

8 Jul

Just when you think San Francisco restaurants can’t get any more creative and fun…Weird Fish‘s Timothy Holt comes along and introduces the Taco Bike.

This three-wheeled taqueria includes - among other things - a hand-free money box, pressurized hot water, a hot water sink, and three propane-heated grills to keep the fish, yam and seitan taco creations separate. This is seriously cool!

taqueria vallarta • the real thing

5 Jul taco lady at TV

If you’re craving real street food tacos in San Francisco, go to Taqueria Vallarta!

Walking into this Mission district institution is like walking into a “local’s” taqueria in Mexico City; and tacos are their specialty.

Here’s a rundown of how the place operates…if you want tacos head to the first counter – or wait in the line that staggers out the door – and order your tacos (in Spanish only) from the taco lady. First, how many you want, then the type of meat. Choices range from pastor (pork) and pollo asada (grilled chicken) to cabeza (steamed head). After a few minutes, she’ll hand you a paper plate with your tacos. Add the toppings to your liking then head to the back counter where the cash register is.
