brass knuckle turns street food into haute cuisine

17 May prawn & roses taco brass knuckles

Brass Knuckle isn’t your average mobile food truck. Seasoned chef Shellie Kitchen hit the streets in January serving-up sandos, tacos and hot dogs with a stylish, modern twist.

Shellie’s innovative take on the classics is just as clever as the menu item names (such as: Parm for Pyros, Eggy Pop) and the eye-catching truck to offer a total experience that is crazy-delicious.

Last June, Off the Grid launched Off the Grid: Fort Mason, a weekly mobile food extravaganza to bring together street food vendors, street food-hungry San Franciscans, live music and good times. It was an instant success. A few months later, Matt Cohen (the mastermind of Off the Grid) and his team, rolled out Off the Grid: Upper Haight and Off the Grid: Civic Center. And he didn’t stop there…

Tomorrow, Off the Grid will kick off its 7th — yes, I said 7th — weekly mobile food festival. Say hello to Off the Grid: Embarcadero Center!

It’s baaaack! Off the Grid’s Friday night street food festival @ Fort Mason kicks off its second season tomorrow night.

One could say that the Fort Mason event is the ’daddy’ of all weekly street food festivals in the Bay Area — it’s definitely one of the most popular.  You can expect Matt Cohen (the mastermind of the Off the Grid festivals) and his team to deliver a tasty time each week with an abundance of taco truck vendors, live music and drinks.

I had an opportunity to speak with Matt this week about the festivals new additions and his thoughts on where street food is heading — here’s what he had to say…

5 questions with señor sisig

15 Mar senor sisig taco truck

Señor Sisig [pronounced see-sig] blazed onto the street scene last year, bringing the flavors of the Philippines to the Bay Area by way of delicious “sisig” dishes. Unlike Hapa SF‘s contemporary approach, Señor Sisig spins traditional street food items such as: tacos, burritos, and nachos, to deliver a solid fusion of Filipino and Mexican cuisine.

I have had their tacos on several occasions — to sum it up, these guys don’t disappoint!

I had an opportunity to learn more about the taco truck…here’s 5 questions with Evan Kidera, co-owner of Señor Sisig.

off the grid street fest expands

7 Sep

In late June, Off the Grid teamed up with La Cocina to roll out Off the Grid: Fort Mason – a weekly mobile food extravaganza that brings together street food vendors, live music, drinks and good times. The event is overwhelmingly popular and growing by the week.

Off the Grid has been talking about starting up similar festivals in other city districts for some time. Well, it looks like the talks are over and the permits have been approved. Thank you city officials! Off the Grid: Upper Haight will roll out this Thursday, September 9th from 4-dusk on the corner of Golden Gate park just west of Stanyan Street and Waller Street. Off the Gird: Civic Center will start this Friday, September 10th from 11am to 3pm at Civic Center Plaza.

The trucks participating:

Upper Haight: 51st State, Chairman Bao, Senior Sisig, Seoul on Wheels, Le Truc, Hapa SF and Curry Up Now

Civic Center: Liba SF, Southern Sandwich Co, Hapa SF, Ebbets Good To Go. According to SF Weekly’s article, the Civic Center vendors will rotate every other week.
