tacobar • me • a fine time

25 Apr veracruz pescado taco • tacobar

We’ve all noticed the explosion of taco trucks and eager chefs hitting the street. But there’s another — quieter — movement gaining traction in San Francisco…the “upscale” taqueria.

It seems like every few months, a new “upscale” taqueria is opening its doors in hopes of proving taco-crazed San Franciscans with its gourmet twist on the taqueria experience. The Marina has Tacolicious and Mamacitas, NoPa has Nopalito, the Lower Haight has The Little Chihuahua…and as of last April, the Pacific Heights district has Tacobar.

3 Mar moroccan veal tongue taco • the taco guys

The Taco Guys hit the streets about a year ago on a mission to push the envelope and reinvent the taco. Their approach is one that blends socially progressive business practices with “ridiculously tasty” tacos made from local and sustainable ingredients.

They are passionate about food and it shows, dishing up tacos “fit for foodies.”

The Taco Guys are Jason Hoffman and Justin Close — two culinary artists with decades of experience working in some of the Bay Area’s most recognized restaurants, including: Azie, La Folie and Scott Howard.

the legendary el metate

19 Aug el mate

A taco blog would be incomplete if it excluded El Metate. I mean, let’s be honest…that’s like discussing fall sports without mentioning football. Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme. Nonetheless, El Metate is a legendary taqueria located in the southern edge of San Francisco’s Mission district.

Like many Mission taquerias, it’s an “order-at-the-counter” establishment with colorful décor, and ample indoor and outdoor seating.

They offer an assortment of Mexican food, but El Metate is probably most well-known for their hearty burritos and fish taco. SF weekly awarded El Metate “best fish taco” in 2008.

So let’s talk taco…

craving fish tacos

26 Jul

Did you pick up San Francisco Chronicle’s Sunday Edition? They ran a 3-page spread on the growing trend of fish tacos in the Bay Area – chefs catch on, roll out a haul of fish tacos.

It just goes to shows, the deliciousness of tacos is catching on…and the street food movement is growing stronger!

The article includes 4 fish taco recipes from Taco Shop @ Underdog, 21st Amendment and Dish.

I know what I’m making for dinner tonight, the Baja-style fish tacos from Taco Shop @ Underdogs! If you want to know more about this place, see my July 16th blog post here.

taco shop @ underdogs • where tacos and sports unite

Sports bar, meet taco shop. And with that, it was the start of a beautiful friendship!

I ventured into the Sunset district this week and found myself at Taco Shop @ Underdogs, a hybrid establishment that is half sports bar, half taco shop.

This place is a gem. With 10 flat screen TVs, ample seating, a well-stocked bar, and memorabilia commemorating the local sports teams – ranging from the San Jose Sharks to the SF Giants – it’s a great place to catch a game and eat some tacos. And no sports bar would be complete without darts, Pac-Man and mini-basketball? I mean, seriously!

The tacos?

Just when you think San Francisco restaurants can’t get any more creative and fun…Weird Fish‘s Timothy Holt comes along and introduces the Taco Bike.

This three-wheeled taqueria includes - among other things - a hand-free money box, pressurized hot water, a hot water sink, and three propane-heated grills to keep the fish, yam and seitan taco creations separate. This is seriously cool!

3 Jul fish taco • tacolicious

Hola Tacolicious!

I made a visit to this gourmet taco eatery in the Marina over the weekend.

Sure, you can say it’s just another “Marina hot spot”, but it’s also the result of Joe Hargrave’s success in proving taco-crazed San Franciscans with delicious food. That’s right; Tacolicious started as a stand at the Ferry Building’s farmer’s market and has grown into a hip, jam-packed restaurant that offers fresh Mexican cuisine and vibrant cocktails. For that, you gotta give Joe some credit!
