Located in the Lower Haight district of San Francisco, The Little Chihuahua is an upscale, yet laid-back taqueria with a mission to make Mexican-inspired food using sustainable farming ingredients.
Their menu is extensive yet predicable: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tostadas, pozole, tortilla soup, nachos and more. They also offer a kick-ass Mexican brunch menu which is available on the weekends until 3pm.
On a recent visit with my friends Dustin, Jordan and Stacy, we opened the door ready to chow on some tacos. And a-eating we did! We ordered the following tacos: carne asada ($4.25), grilled vegetable ($3.75), pollo asado ($3.75), chile verde chicken ($3.75), carnitas ($3.75) and tofu ($3.75). Yes, pretty much their entire taco menu minus the grilled mushroom ($3.75), camarones (shrimp) ($4.50) or salmon ($4.50).
Each taco came with meat (or veggies or tofu) pilled on two corn tortillas served with cabbage salad, cilantro, onion, fresh salsa and a scope of guacamole.
The verdict?
Overall, the food was decent. And the quality, top-notch. The amount meat and toppings piled on one tortilla is impressive…they definitely give you $3.75 worth of food…however, the flavor wasn’t all there. I left feeling full but not totally satisfied. I think the group would agree.
That said, The Little Chihuahua offers “Mexican-inspired” cuisine, so you can’t put it in the same category as some of the taquerias you’ll find in the Mission District. If you live in the neighborhood, and you are looking for an “upscale” yet laid-back taqueria then this is your place.
- Pros: supports sustainable farming, vegetarian options, clean, laid-back, salsa bar
- Cons: hard to eat tacos
- Food: 2.5-3
- What $10 will get you: 2 tacos and a drink with a bit of money left over
